Victoria Canham Coaching: A woman doing exercises on a rock by the ocean

"If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness." — Joyce Sunada

Most high-achieving professionals operate on the assumption that more effort = better results. You work longer hours, push through fatigue, and tell yourself you’ll focus on your health later.

Then one day, later catches up with you. Your energy is shot, your focus is slipping, and you’re running on caffeine and willpower, sleepwalking your way into your next injury.

High performance isn’t about working harder. It’s about managing your energy—mentally, physically, and emotionally—so you can sustain success without sacrificing your health, relationships, or sanity.

The Reality Check: Performance Without Wellness is a Losing Game

I’ve worked with enough high performers to know the warning signs:

✳️ You’re mentally foggy but can’t slow down.

✳️ You’re skipping workouts, eating whatever’s quick, and running on fumes.

✳️ You feel drained even after a full night’s sleep (if you even get a full night).

✳️ You’re not fully present with your family, even when you’re home.

Success at the cost of your well-being isn’t success. It’s just survival. So, how do you build a high-performance lifestyle that actually lasts?

1. Mental Resilience: The CEO Mindset Shift

Your mind is your greatest asset, but most people treat it like an afterthought. The most successful people in the world don’t just think differently—they manage their mental energy with precision. You don’t have to be the CEO of a business to benefit from this, you are the CEO of your life, aren’t you?

▶️ Protect Your Mental Bandwidth – Decision fatigue is real. Reduce unnecessary choices, delegate low-value tasks, and stop wasting energy on things that don’t move the needle.

▶️ Upgrade Your Recovery Strategies – Stress isn’t the enemy; lack of recovery is. If you don’t have systems for decompressing, you’ll operate at a deficit. Meditation, journaling, or even 10 minutes of silence can do more for your performance than another hour of work.

▶️ Get Ruthless About Boundaries – If you don’t set limits, your business or career will consume you. Block out thinking time, create non-negotiable personal hours, and stick to them.

2. Physical Energy: The Power Behind Performance

You wouldn’t run a high-performance car on cheap fuel—so why do it to yourself? As a certified personal trainer, nutrition advisor, and former chef, I can tell you that most high performers sabotage themselves with bad habits disguised as “efficiency.”

▶️ Fuel for Focus, Not Just Convenience – High sugar, high carb, or ultra-processed meals spike and crash your energy. Prioritise lean protein, healthy fats, and slow-release carbs.

▶️ Move Even When You’re Busy – You don’t need a two-hour gym session. Walking meetings, quick strength training, or stretching between calls can keep your energy up.

▶️ Prioritise Sleep Like Your Success Depends on It (Because It Does) – Every major CEO, athlete, and peak performer guards their sleep. Poor sleep = poor decisions. Fix your nighttime routine. Even Bartlett has been banging on about the importance of sleep as if he owns related companies, oh wait...

3. Emotional Stability: The Underrated Success Factor

High performers think they can compartmentalise emotions, but stress, frustration, and burnout will leak into your performance if you don’t handle them.

▶️ Master Your Stress Response – Stress isn’t going anywhere, but your reaction to it is within your control. Breathwork, physical movement, or simply stepping away from work can stop stress from derailing you.

▶️ Build the Right Support Network – You don’t have to do it alone. A strong inner circle—mentors, coaches, or like-minded peers—can help you maintain perspective.

▶️ Detach Success From Constant Hustle – If you’re only satisfied when you’re grinding, you’re on a fast track to burnout. Find wins beyond just work.

This is a Strategy, Not a Luxury

High performance without wellness is short-lived. The professionals who stay at the top prioritise their mental clarity, physical energy, and emotional resilience just as much as their goals.

So, what’s your next move? Keep pushing until you crash—or build a strategy that actually works for the long run?
